SELECTING BOLT DIAMETER FOR
BOLTED PRESSURIZED JOINT*
With
this method, you may select
· A
suitable bolt diameter for typical bolted joint when the joint
is used on a pressurized cylinder having a flanged clamped to
the body of the cylinder by n equally spaced bolts.
You may also obtain :
·
Check the endurance limit of the selected bolt
·
Check your existing bolted pressurized joint modifying someone of
the parameters as follows:
- Bolt
Ultimate strength
- Number
of Bolts
- Vessel
Internal Pressure
- Internal
diameter of the cylinder
Note:
- This method can be used to analyze bolted joints used in pressure
vessels in many different applications-power plants, hydraulic
systems, aircraft, marine equipment, structures, and piping systems.
Joint Sizes (Fig.1)
Case
1: When most of the outside diameter of the joint is equal
to or smaller than the bolt-head diameter, as when parts of a
bushing are clamped.
Case 2: When the outer diameter of the joint DJ is greater
that the effective bolt-head diameter or washer DW, but less than
3DH.
Case 3: When the joint diameter DJ is equal to or greater than
3DH.
Notes:
a. DJ = [0.5*(FOD - ID)]-wt
b. Endurance
is defined as the ratio of fatigue strength to tensile strength.
c. The endurance limit is the
highest stress or range of stress, that can be repeated indefinitely
without failure of the metal. Usually ten million
cycles of deflection is called "infinite life" and is
satisfactory for determining this limit.
